The UniqueEwe clothing line offers one-of-a-kind handcrafted ecologically friendly clothing for women and children. This newly developing business, using recycled materials to design one-of-kind garments, allows me to express myself, my creativity and inner beliefs. It challenges me as an artist, a businesswoman, and a member of this planet. As I create, I think about what this all means to me. It’s the excitement of knowing that others are wearing my artwork. It’s the thought that it makes someone happy, that it makes me happy, that I’m touching a part of someone’s life. But it’s much, much, more.
The piles of materials, for me, hold secret creations not yet discovered. Even I am surprised that something cast off can be transformed into something useful and desirable.
Today there is a pile of mismatched, out-of-date, missing-a-mate garments on my design board. Tomorrow there will be a new and renewed article of clothing. The idea of using Joe’s pants, Jim’s sports coat, and Jill’s blouse to create a new jacket for Jane is fascinating for me. I love the history behind each finished item.
The challenge, when using recycled materials, is having limited resources to create a piece. A finite amount of fabric of just that right color, texture, pattern, or weight, is at times frustrating, yet at the same time inspiring. It often forces color and pattern design combinations that would not have otherwise been considered resulting in an artist’s freedom to incorporate the unexpected, the unconventional. When the final piece is complete and it all comes together, the reward is even sweeter.
The finished design is a one-and-only combination of materials, but more than that, it is a combination of creative moments when everything works in harmony. For me, each item’s evolution is a journey of ecological and humanitarian awareness. It begins with the initial purchase of recycled materials from non-profit organizations and continues to the sale of the item and the donation of a portion of the proceeds to those in need around the world. With the purchase and wearing of this new creation, there is not only an appreciation of the uniqueness of the product by the wearer, but recognition of the intent of the process. Meanwhile, back at the design board, the cycle quietly continues as the next creation begins the process with subtly salvaged sophistication.
